At Kulkumry Coffee: The Blesséd Brew, we are proud to showcase South Indian specialty coffee that embodies not only exceptional flavour but also a commitment to sustainable and ethical farming practices.

We firmly believe that coffee can and should be a prime example of how traditional practices can harmonise with modern environmental goals and have a positive impact on the environment and local communities.

Sustainable Practices in South Indian Coffee Cultivation

1. Shade-Grown Coffee

Shade-Grown Coffee: In South India, coffee is often grown under a canopy of trees, which helps to maintain ecological balance. Shade-grown coffee supports biodiversity by providing a habitat for various species of birds, insects, and plants. This method also helps to reduce soil erosion and maintain soil health.

Environmental Benefits to shade-grown coffee: Shade-grown coffee reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and pesticides, as the natural canopy helps to regulate temperature and humidity. This results in healthier soil and water systems, contributing to overall ecosystem health.

Our signature coffee, Bonaventure, is grown under a canopy of silver oak trees and we have a new silver oak nursery growing alongside the main bungalow and planted along the pathways.

2. Water Conservation in Coffee Production

Water Management: Effective water management is crucial in coffee cultivation, particularly in regions with variable rainfall. South Indian coffee growers often implement water-saving techniques such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting to optimise water use.

Environmental Benefits: By conserving water and reducing wastage, coffee growers help to protect local water resources and reduce the impact on surrounding ecosystems. These practices also ensure a more reliable water supply for coffee production.

3. Community Engagement in Coffee Production

Community Support: Sustainable coffee cultivation in South India extends beyond environmental practices to include social responsibility and we ensure that our workers are paid fairly, and that they have access to healthcare.

Environmental Benefits: Practices such as these contribute to sustainable development by promoting social equity and investing in community infrastructure. This holistic approach helps to create a more sustainable and resilient coffee-growing region.

4. Agroforestry and Biodiversity

Agroforestry: Agroforestry, the practice of growing coffee alongside other crops and trees, is common in South India. This method enhances biodiversity by creating a diverse farming ecosystem that supports various plant and animal species.

Our coffee is grown alongside pepper and other crops. We also have dedicated areas of re-wilding.

Environmental Benefits: Agroforestry systems help to maintain soil health, improve water retention, and provide habitats for wildlife. They also reduce the need for chemical inputs by creating a balanced and resilient agricultural environment.

5. Taste

And of course, coffee is all about its taste, and when farming comes together with nature and community, the coffee definitely tastes nicer. If you don't believe, take a look at our Q grade report!
